Assignment 208: Location Photography - Theme 1
Portrait Photography: Shoot 2

ISO 200, f5.6, 1/160, focal length 105mm

For my second portrait session I choose a sunny afternoon - I wanted to be able to concentrate on outdoor shots full of natural light.

I used the same equipment as the first shoot - my Nikon D70 with a fixed 105mm lens to allow me to create space between myself and the subject but still capture tight facial shots.

I used the same technique - this time capturing the images whilst chatting over a cup of coffee in the garden - soaking up the last rays of sun.

The images have all been converted to black and white, and some minor amends made:

  • cropping out background detail where necessary
  • adjusting contrast to gain the right tone for the black and white image

It was a great afternoon - we hadn't caught up for ages - and there was plenty of laughs to go round as you can see.

This little boy is one of my nephews (I have a few!) he has the blondest hair and the bluest eyes and the cheekiest smile - I couldn't decide wether to change to black and white - what do you think do they work? I think the glint in the eye and the smile retain the beauty.

He was a bit nervous of the camera - and shy of me - so it took a while for him to warm up for the camera.

It took me a while to convince my sister that it didn't need to be a side profile!

Whilst this last one doesn't necessarily fit my overall portrait theme I think it came out so well - and after being married for 40 years it is nice to see such closeness.
